Joe Girardi Interested In Chicago Cubs; Are Dale Sveum’s Days Numbered?

Joe Girardi

The 2013 MLB regular season isn’t even over yet, but pending free agent Joe Girardi is already fielding offers…allegedly.

It’s not exactly cut-and-dry, yet reports have surfaced that Girardi and his camp has already informed the Chicago Cubs that he’s willing to “talk” about becoming the Cubs’ next skipper. Obviously, this is good news for a Chicago fan base that has grown frustrated with current manager Dale Sveum. This wasn’t supposed to be a big year for the Cubs, yet sluggers like Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney all took considerable steps in the wrong direction this summer.

With another year of 90-plus loses, Sveum’s job was already in jeopardy before the Girardi rumors surfaced, so I would be surprised if the Cubs’ opening day roster was being managed by Sveum — the supposed “hitting expert.”

While Chicago waits patiently for team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer, Sveum is likely packing his office. However, the one thing that the Cubs’ current manager can cling to is the fact that Epstein has a past of shying away from some the game’s more high-profile managers and taking a risk on long-time bench coach like Sveum.

Either way, the New York Yankees should be keeping a close eye on Girardi, who could easily stray away from the Big Apple and give Sveum the boot.
