Coming into the final week of the season, the Texas Rangers trailed the Cleveland Indians and the Tampa Bay Rays for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Texas came into the week with the mindset that they had to sweep the seven games in order to give themselves a shot at making the playoffs. After a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, Texas did just that.
With them winning all seven games and Tampa Bay losing two games to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Rangers finished tied with the Rays for the final Wild Card spot. Texas, because they own the tiebreaker, will host Tampa on Monday night at 7:00PM. The two clubs entered the final day tied. Tampa finished off Toronto around the sixth inning of the Rangers’ game so Texas knew they had to win in order to force a one-game playoff.
Obviously Texas shouldn’t be in this position due to the huge collapse they had in the month of September. Texas has to put all of that behind them, though, and move forward. Texas will send Martin Perez to the hill, who has been the most consistent pitcher during the month, while the Rays will counter with David Price. The danger of this type of game is the fact that one game is all this is going to be. The Rangers don’t have the luxury of a five or seven game series. They have to win Monday or the season is over. The winner Monday will move on to play Cleveland on Wednesday.
