With catchers A.J. Pierzynski and Geovany Soto both free agents the Texas Rangers have a great opportunity to upgrade the position. There is no question the best way to do this is to sign free agent Brian McCann.
It is no secret the Rangers have been interested in McCann for quite some time. The long-time Atlanta Braves catcher is someone Texas has attempted to trade for on numerous occasions. Obviously, it will not be easy acquiring the seven-time All-Star considering many teams will be interested. With that being said, it does not appear that anyone wants his presence on their roster more than the Rangers do.
Even though McCann will be a costly addition to the team, there is no doubt he is worth it. His offensive numbers do not exactly jump off the page, especially his .256 batting average. With that being said the fact that Texas can expect at least 20 home runs and 60 RBI from him is certainly something to be excited about. Not to mention, his .797 OPS (on-base percentage + slugging percentage) is what grabs the attention of the Rangers. Simply put, Texas wants more power on offense and McCann is the man to supply it.
It should be pointed out that the Rangers would be losing a step on defense with McCann starting behind the plate. His fielding percentage is always excellent but he definitely struggles when it comes to preventing base runners from stealing. His career .238 caught stealing percentage is downright horrendous. It could be a factor but definitely something Texas could live with considering he will be an upgrade in several other areas.
