In the first few games of the 2013 ALDS between the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers there are a couple o stories developing that are similar. Actually they have been developing for a while. For the Tigers, the wounded warrior is slugger Miguel Cabrera. In spite of his being clearly injured, the Tigers have him in the line-up. The same is true of the Athletics and Yoenis Cespedes although Cespedes is probably not as bad off as Cabrera.

The idea beind the both of them is the same. Just like the Tigers and Cabrera, the Athletics need Cespedes in the game even if he isn’t 100 percent. If he is unable to perform as an outfielder, you would likely see him as a DH. His bat is important but his defense is as well. Win or lose in the first game or two, the Athletics have a much better chance to do well in this series and pull of the upset that a lot of people are looking for with Cespedes in the order.

It will be hard for Cespedes or any of the Athletics to have a good game against Max Scherzer but over the course of the five game series they have a much better chance with him in there. They work as a team very well and really Cespedes is as close to the superstar of the team as anyone. Josh Donaldson at third and Cespedes are the two that they really need in there and performing as close to their best as possible. If they both do their work the rest of the team will follow suit and the A’s will have their upset.
