2013 ALDS: Detroit Tigers Will Keep Riding Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer has carried this Detroit Tigers team throughout the regular season, and you can now add postseason to his resume.
Many questioned not using last year’s ace and AL MVP Justin Verlander, but now there is no question that Scherzer is not only the guy who brought the Tigers to the dance, but he is going to be the one to carry them home. The 21 wins were staggering, but the Game 1 performance was even more dominant than anyone could have imagined.
Scherzer is now the go-to pitcher for this team when they absolutely have to have a win, and there is no more question about if there is another pitcher in all of baseball they would want on the mound in those situations. Scherzer has the type of electric command and mastery only seen by a very select few, and he is a guy that other teams are going to be cowering over having to face.
The Tigers are finding themselves in a great position because when a team has a pitcher they can rely on to win, especially in the postseason, they know that they have a puncher’s chance at competing with anyone.
Scherzer has been the workhorse and will continue to be as the games get more and more meaningful. Now the Tigers don’t need to rely on Verlander to turn himself completely around to be the ace and can just hope he can fill in behind a dominant Scherzer. Teams need a legitimate ace to be a contender for a World Series championship, and the Tigers have that in Scherzer without a doubt.
