Texas Rangers Rumors: Joe Nathan Should Move Elsewhere

Joe Nathan

As the Texas Rangers approach the meat of the offseason, they have a few choices before them. They could offer a contract to recently suspended Nelson Cruz for example. Also they could do more than just pick up the option on Joe Nathan, their world class closer. They have the choice of what to do about manager Ron Washington in front of them. Of all their choices they seem to have already made a choice on Nathan and it makes little sense to me.

They have already claimed to be willing to go after a long term contract for Cruz but GM Jon Daniels said that they are not willing to consider more than the team option on Nathan. I am not sure why they would make that decision. Nathan is in his upper 30’s but that doesn’t mean he has lost it. As a matter of fact with 43 saves and a 1.39 ERA, Nathan had one of his better and some say his best seasons. He is very unlikely to lose a lot of that touch between now and the age of about 41.

As consistent as he has been, Nathan should at least warrant a three year deal from the Rangers. The fact that they aren’t even willing to talk about it should mean that they have other plans. Maybe they have someone in mind to take Nathan’s place. Whatever their plans, Nathan should opt out of the team option which is something he can do, and look elsewhere for a team that will give him a longer contract. I bet there would be five to ten teams that would bounce right on him in the free agent market.
