The Oakland Athletics find themselves in a rare position going into game four of an ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. Even the odds makers in Las Vegas wouldn’t bet against them right now. They are up two games to one on a Tigers team that seems less than half of what they were during the summer. It seems like all the A’s need to do is keep doing what they are doing and they’ll be waiting on who their ALCS opponent will be. To try and achieve this they are starting pitcher Dan Straily.
Straily is more the right man for the job that it might seem on first glance. First of all he faced the Tigers once this year and did very well. He threw eight solid innings giving up only two runs and striking out four but that isn’t the only good sign. Also the fact that the game is happening during the day is a huge plus. It will start at 4:00 pm Detroit time which is a pretty good slot to have a lot of daylight left for at least the first half of the game. Home and away don’t make that big of a difference for Straily but his daytime ERA is about 2.70 runs per game lower than the night ERA.
There are no guarantees going into an elimination game against the defending American League champs especially at their home field but Straily starting it during the day is a good option. The fact that he is starting in this game for the A’s however gives them a much better chance than it would seem at face value. Momentum is firmly on his and the A’s side and all they have to do is keep it there.
