ALDS: Doug Fister is Good Choice for Detroit Tigers Elimination Game
The Detroit Tigers probably didn’t think they would find themselves in an elimination game so early in the 2013 MLB playoffs but that is exactly what they are starting on Tuesday afternoon against the Oakland Athletics. The best two things going for the Tigers in this game four showdown is the fact that it is at home in Detroit and that Doug Fister is starting. Yes, Fister is a good option for them in this game even though it would be very tempting to bring back Max Scherzer on short rest.
Obviously they would not want to face a game four elimination in the division series in Oakland’s home ballpark, so that makes it easy to point at the one good thing. It isn’t likely however that the home field advantage will be a huge factor for the Tigers. For certain though the Athletics would be more amped up if they were playing on their home field. The biggest thing that the Tigers need right now is a big start from Fister.
The best thing about Fister is the thing that the Tigers need most as a team right now. He is consistent. No matter what split statistics you look at, you’ll find an ERA somewhere between 3.00 and 3.50 range for him. Day and night don’t matter that much. His ERA at home is about the same as anywhere. It varies some but that 3 runs per game average is what the Tigers need from him. The rest is up to the offense. If the bats are going to remain fairly quiet, it won’t matter who is pitching. You can be sure that Fister will be on a short hook though.
