Cleveland Indians Rumors: Team Should Bring Back Jason Giambi to Play
In their little season-ending press conference, Cleveland Indians manager and GM set their goals for the 2014 off-season and preseason. Terry Francona and Chris Antonetti had many things they want to accomplish for next season just like they did last year for the 2013 season. One of the biggest things they want to do is bring back Jason Giambi either as a player / coach or just one or the other. He can be a great coach one day but they should bring back Giambi as a player no matter what.
Giambi is way past his prime but he proved this season what a player can give to a team after his best seasons are gone. This year he didn’t quite hit .200 for the season but he did have 9 home runs and over 30 RBI. For a part-time role that isn’t that bad. When you consider what he gave the team in leadership it becomes even clearer how important he is. I think him diving head-first to get a base hit in a blowout game gave the young guys a lot of an idea of the way the game is supposed to be played.
Oh, and did I mention he was clutch all year long? I am not even talking about the two most memorable walk-off home runs in baseball this season. As a whole, he was clutch. With runners in scoring position his average rose up to .271 with 4 home runs and 25 RBI. With two outs and runners in scoring position he was .261. Also, something that isn’t thought about that much, in 48 at-bats with runners in scoring position he only hit into one double-play.
This is not someone that has nothing to contribute. If he played for a manager that did not know how to correctly use him it would be a problem. Playing for Francona however makes it a perfect match. He wants to play again next year, Antonetti and Francona want him to play and coach next year. That should be all that matters.
