ALCS 2013 Preview: Who Would Boston Red Sox be Better off Facing in ALCS?

Boston Red Sox

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

After taking care of business with the tough and scrappy Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox are waiting to find out which team they will face in the American League Championship Series. Whether against the Oakland Athletics or Detroit Tigers, it is sure to be an exciting ALCS but which team would the Red Sox be better off facing? Well the answer at face value is basically neither. They have a 3 – 4 record against the Tigers and were 3 – 3 against the Athletics. I think when broken down they would have a slightly easier time against the A’s.

The Tigers were a little easier to defeat down the stretch and that goes for the Red Sox as well. They had a fairly easy time with Detroit in the final series while they struggled against the Athletics the last time they faced them. What it comes down to is who was hotter. Towards the end of the season the Tigers were ice cold and the Athletics were on fire. Honestly, whichever team wins will be sufficiently on fire after winning the ALDS against the other.

After that it will come down to pitching matchups. Some say the A’s would be easier for the Red Sox because they don’t have as overpowering of pitching but I don’t believe that is true. It comes down to which pitcher delivers his good stuff. If Bartolo Colon is on, he is just as hard to beat as Max Scherzer any day of the week.

The truth of the matter is this is going to be an awesome ALCS no matter what team makes it in. The A’s are not a pushover and the Tigers are not a powerhouse. Whichever team they face, I think the Red Sox will prove one game better and beat them in six or seven games now that they got passed the Rays.
