Bartolo Colon said after his team was eliminated from the MLB postseason that he would like to return to play for the Oakland Athletics and also that he believes he can pitch for another three seasons. For their part the Athletics have said that they would be crazy not to want Colon back and there you go, that should take care of it. Except that this is where the business side of baseball comes in and that means there are no guarantees. It makes sense for Colon to return to the A’s but that doesn’t mean he will.
As far as the baseball side of things goes, there is little doubt that Colon is able and willing to pitch at the major league level still. His performance in the postseason was good except for a shaky first inning so that part is still solid as well. Basically the Athletics are right in that they would be nuts not to bring him back. The only worrisome part of this is the way Colon suggests he can play three more seasons.
For the matter of the fact, it may be true that he can pitch for three more seasons. What might not be possible however is to get a three year deal from someone, let alone the cash-strapped Athletics. Colon was a top of the league starter and an All-Star in 2013. You figure he could get a pretty good payday from a team looking for an experienced ace.
Though they do need him, I do not think the A’s need him bad enough to warrant a three year deal because of his age. Hopefully the two sides can come to an agreement on a one year deal with a possible team-option for the next that is littered with incentives. That kind of deal would be a perfect way to bring Colon back to O.co to pitch in 2014.
