ALCS 2013: Prince Fielder Might Have to Bust Out for the Detroit Tigers to Win
Little could be said to deny that Prince Fielder is a prolific presence in the Detroit Tigers batting order. He is very important even when Miguel Cabrera is fully healthy. With the current situation and Miggy’s injuries, Fielder is that much more important. Going into ALCS game six against the Boston Red Sox, the Tigers best chance at winning is clearly to get a shutout performance from their starting pitcher Max Scherzer. Wouldn’t it be great if their best chance was the thunderous bat of Fielder?
Using last season as a measuring stick, Fielder producing runs is an important component for the Tigers. He drove in runs in their winning series during the 2012 MLB postseason and they won both. During the World Series against the San Francisco Giants he failed to drive in a run and struggled. As we know, they lost. Going into game six they know they have to win or they go home. Fielder needs to have his A-game and do whatever work he needs to do to be ready.
That could mean adjustments or any number of things but it could be the critical component once again for the Tigers. His slump just cannot continue if they want to have their best chance at winning. Scherzer is amazing but he is not a machine. The Tigers will need to score some runs to beat the Red Sox in these two games. If they score a few runs, which a power-hitting Fielder would help greatly with, Scherzer and Justin Verlander could seemingly take care of the rest.
