Colorado Rockies Bullpen Needs a Major Overhaul Before 2014 Season
Two members of the Colorado Rockies 2013 bullpen have been allowed to understand that if they get a chance in 2014 it will only be because they earned it anew. Jeff Manship and Manny Corpas are those I speak of but they will likely not be the last of the 2013 Rockies bullpen to have to fight to keep a job. In case you didn’t take notes on the Rockies 2013 season, their bullpen was not very good.
Actually that is quite an understatement. They had the worst bullpen in the National League. Only two American League ‘pens were worse than theirs. It comes down eventually to individual performance of course and it was not good at all. Of the Rockies bullpen pitchers that threw at least 28 innings, only Adam Ottavino and Rex Brothers had an ERA under four. Everyone else stunk it up pretty good.
I guess we know why Brothers wound up with the job of closer by the end of the season. Look for both of those to stay for sure but everyone else needs a giant shake-up. Whether or not the Rockies dump most of them is hard to say but I would bet they try to at least bring in a few new faces to spring training. It couldn’t be said of the entire team but when it comes to the bullpen you can bet that few spots will be guaranteed on this staff come Spring 2014.
