Should Kansas City Royals Trade for Brandon Phillips?
The Kansas City Royals are on the verge of their most important offseason in recent memory. That is simply what happens when a team posts their first winning record since 2003. In order to maximize the potential this winter, the Royals must strongly consider trading for Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips.
Phillips could be the odd man out in Cincinnati with all of the spending that is about to occur. It is true that he is signed with the team for another four years. However, certain actions of his have not gone over well with the organization recently. For that reason, a move could very well be made whether it is personal, financial or both.
The Royals are in desperate need of an offensive second baseman. In fact, the case could be made that the position is one of the reasons the team was held back last season. It is hard for a team to be competitive when four players who suit up at the same position throughout the year combine for a .226 batting average, four home runs and 42 RBI in 570 at-bats.
The good news is Phillips would be a huge upgrade at the plate and an improvement on defense. His .271 batting average is not something that should be focused on, although it is still a positive for Kansas City. What the Royals need to realize is that Phillips has hit at least 17 home runs per season since 2006, including 18 this year. He also recorded a career-high 103 RBI in 2013. Throw in the fact that his speed directly results in runs and Kansas City really has no choice but seek out an offer.
