Colorado Rockies Rumors: Justin Morneau and Coors Field Could be Very Good

Justin Morneau

With the retirement of new-legend Todd Helton there is a vacuum at first base for the Colorado Rockies. Some assume rightly so that Michael Cuddyer could fill that hole as well as other possibilities but one rumored possibility is very interesting. Among those on the Rockies free agent radar is first baseman Justin Morneau. Now that would be something that could turn out extremely well for both sides of the deal if the Rockies were able to get him.

Chances are that Morneau will still land a pretty good deal on the free agent market in spite of the fact that he hasn’t had the best seasons lately. Don’t let that discourage you though. This Rockies team is right there and willing to pay for team improvements this offseason. Don’t believe me? You should check out the teams interested in Jose Dariel Abreu. The Rockies obviously didn’t go to nearly $70MM but they were in there somewhere.

They didn’t pay that much for Abreu and they shouldn’t have but even a solid contract for Morneau would be within their price range. Morneau is a solid defensive first baseman and could see a continued offensive resurgence like he started in his final days in Minnesota, with days spent at Coors Field.

It isn’t the launching pad that it once was but there is no doubt that it is a good place to hit if only because of the dimensions of the place. I think the Rockies would benefit from having Morneau and Morneau would do very well as a Rockies first baseman. Whatever the particulars are, here is hoping that both sides get the deal done because neither would be sorry.
