The Detroit Tigers need an outfielder that can hit, Shin-Soo Choo is an outfielder who can hit. When you look at all the outfielders on the current market, you feel like Goldilocks because you are being forced to choose between many different options. You don’t want one who is too expensive given the current situation the Tigers are in financially like Jacoby Ellsbury but you also don’t want a cheap one that isn’t going to make an impact. What the Tigers need is a middle option who is affordable but can bring some speed and power to a lineup in desperate need of both. What the Tigers need is Shin-Soo Choo.

There are going to be other suitors for Shin-Soo Choo but if the Tigers focus in on him early they should be able to land him. Most of the talk will go to Jacoby Ellsbury and for good reason because he is an extremely good player but what the Tigers cannot afford is another player locked up for eternity at over $100 million in salary like Ellsbury will be. The Tigers need to start to value a coupon approach, getting most of the same production from Choo at a lower cost so they can lock up guys like Miguel Cabrera long term. The Tigers aren’t slashing their budget but they need to be smarter about how they allocate their money.

Signing Choo is the best thing the Tigers can do right now and then they can move on to the bullpen and what to do with Max Scherzer. Choo doesn’t seem like he will be a free agent for long so the Tigers need to move him up on their list of priorities and make their best pitch for him to come to Detroit. There are other options if the Tigers don’t get Choo but none of the options have the sort of bang for the buck that Choo can offer the Tigers. It’s time for the Tigers to roll up their sleeves and get to work on signing Shin-Soo Choo.
