St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox: 5 Players That Must Deliver
5 Players That Must Deliver
The 2013 post season has truly been one to remember. From clutch, dramatic hitting to some of the best pitching duels and performances we have ever seen it has simply had it all.
The ALCS was certainly one to remember. A classic series. One that featured two of the very best pitchers in baseball in Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. It also featured maybe the best post season clutch hitter of all time. David Ortiz. In an October oddity hitting won out over pitching as the Boston Red Sox took down the Tigers in a thrilling seven-game series.
The St. Louis Cardinals had an easier path to winning their fouth National League pennant in 10 years but they have some impressive story lines of their own. Michael Wacha may just be the best tale in baseball this year. He is simply dominating opposing hitters as a rookie. This isn't the minor leagues folks. This is October baseball. Yet he is making it look like tee ball as he goes out their every fourth day and is in cruise control from beginning to end. The Cardinals have a special one in Wacha for a long time.
Keep in mind, the Cardinals have done all this without arguably their best hitter in Allen Craig.
Craig is slated to potentially come back in this series from injury. It is likely he will only be able to play in Boston as a DH as he may be only healthy enough to be a pure hitter. That's ok for the Cardinals. He can rake.
This should be a classic World Series. One to remember. Let's take a look at five players that must deliver in the 2013 MLB World Series.
5. Carlos Beltran
Carlos Beltran is the Cardinals version of David Ortiz. The man they rely on in a pinch to get a clutch hit. Boy has he delivered. Beltran has been ... well ... Beltran in the postseason. He loves October baseball. I expect similar production from the October legend going into this World Series.
4. Jon Lester
Jon Lester is the Red Sox ace and the man they will look to get them to glory if it comes down to a decisive Game 7. Lester will have to pitch like an ace if the Red Sox want to win their third World Series in nine years.
3. Shane Victorino
Shane Victorino. The Flying Hawaiian. He will live in Red Sox folklore forever after hitting a grand slam to send them to the World Series. He has done it all for the Sox in this post season. They will need that to continue in the Fall Classic.
2. Michael Wacha
Michael Wacha has been the headline of the post season. He has simply been unhittable. As a rookie in the post season that is quite a feat. Wacha will look to provide the Cardinals with more of the same and will have to if the Cardinals want to win another championship.
1. David Ortiz
Big Papi. David Ortiz. Not much more need be said. He is synonymous with playoff baseball. Ortiz's clutch grand slam lifted the Red Sox from impending doom, back to life, and into the World Series. If Ortiz is in another pressurized situation expect more of the same from the playoff legend.
