2013 World Series: Mike Matheny Needs To Have St. Louis Cardinals Better Prepared For Game 2
Mike Matheny has done an impressive job in two short seasons as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, but he needs to be extremely impressive in the next few games if his Cardinals are to overcome the Boston Red Sox and be MLB champions.
The Cardinals seemed to be in another world against Boston. It was shocking how dominated they were and how they just weren’t ready to play in an 8-1 loss. That’s not the character of a St. Louis World Series team. Matheny simply needs to guide his team into the second game of this series with renewed confidence and determination, and with a lineup that’s going to be a better match to shut down the Boston bats and enable the Cardinals to get more timely hits.
It’s all on Matheny now. It won’t be easy simply because the Red Sox are so talented and also because history is on Boston’s side. Of the last 25 World Series winners, 21 have won the first game. That’s understandable because the opener can set the tone. That’s why Matheny needs to go to work now to have his team set a different tone.
Another stat that might favor the Cards is that 15 teams have won Game 1 by at least six runs in MLB history, but only eight went on to take the Series. The past obviously doesn’t matter, and the Cardinals can still beat the trend. Matheny needs to get them back in the right direction.
