5 Players the Chicago White Sox Could Sever Ties With Before 2014 Season

The list of names that left the Chicago White Sox during the 2013 season reads like their list of most valuable from seasons before. Jake Peavy and Alex Rios are the big names for sure but they certainly won’t be the last names of the White Sox to leave before the start of the 2014 season. For all the rumored moves one might think the Sox are getting addicted to sending players away to get some in return.

There are those rumored moves I agree with and those I do not but without a doubt the big mover and shaker for this off-season of the White Sox has already happened. I’m talking of course about the $68MM signing of Cuban defector Jose Dariel Abreu. He is expected to come in and start at first base swinging a bat well enough to warrant twice the money he was signed for. That is what the White Sox expect that is, some experts do not agree.

One thing for sure is that the signing definitely affects the Sox 2014 roster, especially the situation at first base. You can be sure that no matter what the Sox will stick Abreu over there at first base. What else happens around that situation could determine the entire outlook of the team and the season. With the rumored moves in mind and the aftershocks of the Abreu signing, here are five names that the 2014 White Sox could do without.

5 – Dylan Axelrod

This is the easiest of the five names on this list. Axelrod just didn’t do anything for the Sox this past season. If they are willing to part ways with the likes of Jesse Crain and other productive players, I would imagine they could find it in themselves to send Axelrod packing so he can work on doing better with someone else. A 5.68 ERA certainly isn’t going to cut it for any MLB team for long.

4 – Paul Konerko

This is the first possible aftershock of the Abreu signing. If the Sox are going to keep the slightly disappointing numbers of Adam Dunn, there will be no place for the possibly retiring legend Konerko in the possible case that he does not retire. I’m not sure what Abreu will accomplish during his first MLB season but I for one would rather put his name on this list than Konerko. Sadly enough I think the reality will be the other way around.

3 – Adam Dunn

Here is the second possible aftershock of the Abreu signing. Maybe the kid will produce plenty well enough and the White Sox will chose to put him in a big role and move Dunn somewhere else or at least let him drift somewhere else. They could chose to keep either Dunn or Konerko but if Konerko retires, Dunn could move as well to give a clean start at first base and DH.

2 – Gordon Beckham

If the White Sox are interested in trading either Beckham or Alexei Ramirez, I think Beckham makes the most sense simply because he delivers less production than Ramirez. Both players are fine but since they appear very interested in trading one or the other at least, it should be easier to replace Beckham than Ramirez.

1 – John Danks

The story of how Danks is trying to return to his best form before the end of his current contract is a great one but he still is putting up high ERA each season. Here is hoping this season will be different but chances are against that as his average has been between 4.00 and 5.00 of late. For over 16 million bucks per season that is just too much. The Sox would do well to find someone else to take Danks and he possibly could do well with a change of scenery.
