5 Players the Cleveland Indians Could Sever Ties With Before 2014 Season

When Terry Francona was brought in last off-season I knew it was the best move the Cleveland Indians could have made. It is the best move they’ll make for the next five seasons including the current offseason. They went way farther than anyone thought they would and all signs are that they’ll do the same or better in the 2014 season. To get there they have some choices to make however including what to do with their seven free agents after the season.

Some would say that the team could do without Jason Giambi easily but I don’t think that is true, nor will it happen. Francona is as sold out on Giambi as anyone else on the team, plus he isn’t going to cost them all that much. He should be brought back for all the stuff he does for the team behind the scenes and the awesome moments he provides on the field as well down the stretch and in clutch situations here and there.

There are some players that they do not need at all and really shouldn’t have picked up in the first place. A few can be sent on their way for reasons that pertain to the team moving on but these really shouldn’t be difficult decisions unlike some they will need to make before the start of the season. Anyone they do not sign right now is just one more bit of cash they can throw at Ubaldo Jimenez to hopefully re-sign him.

5 – Jason Kubel

Kubel is a decent talent but he only played in a few games down the stretch and basically did little or nothing. There really is simply no reason that the Indians would need him next season as he wasn’t able to contribute while he was there.

4 – Kelly Shoppach

Shoppach was used fewer times than anyone on the team after he was brought over. He only showed up in a game or two and while he has plenty of good left to give a team, it shouldn’t be the Indians. They have a couple of solid catchers and no real need for a third going into the season.

3 – Matt Albers

One of the most important things about any team headed towards the postseason or at least hoping to is the bullpen. Each season some pitchers need to move out while others move in. I think Ablers would make a great addition to someone else’s team and the Indians should move on with that they have and other additions that can keep their ERA a little lower than Albers did.

2 – Scott Kazmir

Kazmir has plenty of good left in his arm but not as much as Jimenez. They have a slight overload of starting pitching as it is plus Trevor Bauer waiting to pop onto the MLB scene soon. Any money thought to be owed to Kazmir should be redirected towards Jimenez to try and bring him back.

1 – Ryan Raburn

Raburn was very productive in the games he played this season but he is productive enough that they shouldn’t necessarily keep him if they aren’t going to have playing time for him. I think he would be a very good trade chip to add in and possibly shake things around in the pitching staff, especially if they are unable to re-sign Jimenez. He did just get signed to a small extension but such players have been traded before. What he does in limited time could bring them a lot in return.
