5 Detroit Tigers Who Need To Be On 2014 Roster

Jim Leyland is not the only mainstay that is going to be missing from the 2014 version of the Detroit Tigers. As free agency hits and contracts begin to come up the Tigers are going to have to let go of some players who have made their names as Tigers. However, there are several current Tigers hitting free agency either this offseason or next that absolutely cannot be let go because they give too much value to this team.

Some players you are okay seeing go like Jose Valverde or Brandon Inge. While mostly personal those moves arguably made the Tigers better in their absence. You don't need to retain every single player, but you do need to keep a certain core on the roster if you are going to maintain a certain level of success. Too many teams change rosters excessively and it leads to teams who look good on paper but do not gel well. It may be expensive, but if you want to win it all you need a roster that is used to each other and knows each others' strengths and weaknesses.

So take a look at the five players who need to be on the 2014 roster. Some will argue that it will be too expensive to bring all of these players back, but if the ultimate goal is to win it all the Tigers simply cannot afford to let these players walk. More can be added on, but when you lose too many off a roster, especially after changing management, it can lead to a complete disaster. The Tigers don't have time to deal with any disasters right now.

Ramon Santiago is a guy who is easy to let go but he is cheap, can play superb defense and is great at working within a team. Every team needs a few guys like Ramon Santiago.

4. Jhonny Peralta

This will surprise some people but Jhonny Peralta could be a big steal since his new contract will not be as expensive as his numbers would have gotten him if not for the steroid scandal. Peralta is serviceable now in the outfield and his bat is one of the best the Tigers have.

3. Omar Infante

Omar Infante is one of the best second basemen in the league, and it is a case of who else can you find if you let him go? Hopefully the demand for Infante doesn't reach ridiculous levels so the Tigers can swoop in and re-sign him.

2. Joaquin Benoit

Joaquin Benoit is one of the few relievers the Tigers have that is of worth. Losing him would only further the giant hole the Tigers have at the position.

Max Scherzer does not need to be traded this offseason. The Tigers need to reevaluate mid-season, but to start he should be on this roster helping the Tigers gain wins.
