Wilin Rosario did a great job behind the plate for the Colorado Rockies but a rumored attempt to sign free agent catcher Carlos Ruiz would be an even better option for the team. There are a lot of catching options on the market but the idea of bringing in a catcher from the outside would potentially fill holes in more than one spot. Some say that it is unlikely that Ruiz will sign with anyone other than the Philadelphia Phillies but the rumored attempt at drawing his attention by the Rockies is what the good news here is.
The general idea is that a free agent catcher would take care of most of the catching duties and Rosario would get most of his playing time at first base or even in the outfield. When he was at first base, Michael Cuddyer could stay in the outfield and the roster would suddenly look fairly full. Rosario would indeed be available for some catching duties of course but moving him elsewhere is a good option.
Even if Ruiz is not able to be signed away from his former team, other options are out there. Actually below the level of Brian McCann, there are a ton of free agent catchers that could potentially be a big help to the Rockies in the upcoming season. It is a little bit unorthodox but is still a very good idea if it could be completed in a successful fashion.
