Robinson Cano’s Silver Slugger Award Shows Why New York Yankees Must Re-sign Him

Robinson Cano

Nick Turchiaro- USA TODAY Sports

After a season full of injuries, drama and doubt, the New York Yankees have something to be happy about. Second baseman Robinson Cano received the Silver Slugger Award for his production in offense this past season. He was the most consistent player on the team this past season and was one of a very limited number of veterans who stayed healthy throughout.

Cano beat out the rest of the second basemen in the AL for the title of best hitter, basically. He had a .314 batting average, 27 home runs and 107 RBIs. Clearly, these statistics prove that he deserved the award. He was the hottest hitter for the Yankees, a team who’s lineup was half filled with backups and names that most people hadn’t heard of.

Along with having the best bat, he proved to not only his teammates, but the whole organization that he can lead a team. He led a lineup that did not include the names of Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter (most of the season), Alex Rodriguez for half of the season and Kevin Youkilis, who played in 28 games. Without those veterans, it seemed all hope was lost, but Cano did the best he could with what he had.

By winning this award, the Yankees’ executives should really make a push to re-sign Cano as soon as possible. He is a free agent at the current moment, and it would be a shame if he decides to play elsewhere. This past season, he made a statement to his club saying he should stay. With the award, he added an exclamation mark at the end.
