Wilson has named the Arizona Diamondbacks the National League’s best defensive team for 2013 and among their great defenders none is better than Gerardo Parra. Parra won not only his second Gold Glove award this season but also was named the National League’s top defender by Wilson. There are many good defenders but it is very hard to argue with this label being given to Parra. He is definitely one of the best out there.
His 17 assists led the National League and was tied for the MLB lead. The Wilson award is given out based upon many factors including Sabermetrics statistics. That would explain why Parra is one of the best or according to them, the best. For the season on offense Para had a .268 batting average, 10 home runs and 48 RBI. In spite of these low production numbers his WAR was still 6.1 for the 2013 season.
Without a doubt, offense matters in the outfield. It is almost more important however that at least one defensive outfielder for each team is a supreme defender. Parra’s offensive numbers are decent but when combined with runs he saves on defense, become awesome. Put simply, he is one of the best defenders in baseball. If he were able to put MVP numbers up on offense, he would be one of the top few players in the game. That is how good he is defensively and why he deserves the recognition he is getting.
