There is a fast developing hole at second base for the Atlanta Braves. As the GM Meetings get ready to begin, Frank Wren is blatantly stating that he is looking for a suitor that will take Dan Uggla and at least part of his large salary for the next two seasons. For some Braves fans it might not matter at all who they choose for the replacement but one possibility from the free agent market is quite intriguing. Omar Infante is one of the quieter second baseman on the free agent market and the Braves certainly remember that he is capable at second.
It was he after all that was sent to the Miami Marlins in the deal that brought Uggla to the Braves a few years ago. No one could have known then that the Braves were about to pay a ton more money for way less production. In the market for second baseman, Infante might not be considered the best, but he is in the conversation.
He isn’t Robinson Cano of course and isn’t quite on par with Brandon Phillips most would say, but he isn’t far off either. When you add in the fact that the Braves could probably pay less than Uggla, it gets really sweet. His production is bound to be a lot more than that of Uggla while his price tag would certainly be way less than Cano or whatever they would take on of Phillips. There is a chance that the Braves will fill the second baseman need from within but Infante certainly deserves a peek.
