Rant Sports MLB Top 50 Players of 2014: No. 13 Yu Darvish

Yu Darvish

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

When I think of Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers I think of perfection. Rather I think of how this man started the season within one out of a perfect game. After losing that perfect game he simply kept pitching well all season long. Many starting pitchers could have lost a half of a season or more pressing themselves into trying to achieve that perfection that barely avoided their grasp. This ability of Darvish to simply pitch his game no matter the situation is one huge reason he is one of the top few starters in Major League Baseball and No. 13 on the Rant Sports MLB Top 50.

His rookie season in 2012 Darvish earned ninth in Cy-Young voting. Most figure the American League Cy Young award is basically decided already but that might not be true for this season. Darvish has more than one or two claims to the top spot this season for starters. His line is quite impressive with 209.2 IP, a 2.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 277 strikeouts and 11.9 K’s per 9 innings. By itself that will make a few nod impressively. Consider this though.

Of those numbers only WHIP and innings pitched are bested by Max Scherzer’s 0.97 and 214.1 respectively. Scherzer had more wins and gave up fewer homers but without a doubt Darvish deserves more than a glance for the best starter in the entire American League. As far as his position in the MLB top 50, I would look for it to only improve in the years to come. He is quickly becoming one of the very best.
