Boston Red Sox Rumors: Carlos Beltran a Reality?

Boston Red Sox Rumors Carlos Beltran a Reality

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Slugger Carlos Beltran is the fifth best free agent available in baseball, according to Rant Sports’ Destinations for Top 25 MLB Free Agents. There is no question he will land with a contender. At this point, it is just a matter of dissecting which contender is the most serious in going after him. One team that appears to have shown some interest is none other than the Boston Red Sox.

It remains to be seen how realistic the Red Sox are of signing the 37-year-old. With that being said, he would be a tremendous acquisition as the ball club attempts to defend their World Series title.

The only way it works is if Beltran plays left field because moving Shane Victorino out of right would be ludicrous, especially after how well he played for Boston in the postseason. According to the Boston Herald, the only other way it works is if the Red Sox are unable to re-sign first baseman Mike Napoli, which appears to be one of their key areas of interest in the offseason.

There is no question Beltran’s presence in Boston’s lineup would make the offense very good. However, it is no secret that Beltran wants to get paid, which means he will most likely sign with the contender that offers the most money. As much as the Red Sox would love to see the veteran launch homers over the green monster, a team such as the New York Yankees is more likely to give the more expensive contract.

It appears the most likely situation is Boston continues talks with Beltran in hopes of landing a cheaper deal with Napoli. If the conversation with Beltran goes in a positive direction then the Red Sox will get an incredible addition to the roster. If it doesn’t then Boston will still find themselves in a win situation.
