Oakland Athletics Will be Fine With or Without Bartolo Colon

Even at the tender age of 40+ Bartolo Colon should be worth quite a look on the free agent market this MLB offseason. The Oakland Athletics are one of the most interested teams in Colon because of course he has been on their starting rotation for long enough that they know well how he performs. Because there is some level of uncertainty about what Colon can do next year and the one after that, you might figure that he would be interested in signing with his former team. That doesn’t appear to be the case however.

There is apparently enough interest in Colon’s services that he is not likely to re-sign with a team that is not a major team. I guess the Athletics are not considered to be a major team because the rumor is that he will not re-sign with them. The good news is that if he does sign elsewhere they will be fine. If he decides to return however they would be fine then. They are in a very good position as far as Colon’s services are concerned.

They have a good stable of pitching as things stand and Colon wouldn’t be the number one starter anyway even if he did return. This will allow them to basically approach his people and pick a number they are unwilling to go over. They can just say here is our number, take it or leave it. No matter what he chooses to do they would be fine. If it were me I might hope he signs for one more year. Then again it could be a perfect time to move on without the veteran presence as well.
