It isn’t quite a secret that the San Francisco Giants are looking to solidify a spot or two in their starting rotation. It seems that they want to fill that spot with a good and reliable veteran arm if possible. One hurler they are looking at is Tim Hudson but he seems very likely to re-sign with the Atlanta Braves. Also on their watch list in the free agent market is solid veteran Dan Haren. He would possibly be a better free agent target for the Giants.
While it is certainly a matter of argument whether or not Haren is more or less reliable than Hudson, he is probably more easily attainable. His numbers are solid but not Earth shattering. The main thing with Haren would be that the team not hang their entire season on him and that would be the case in San Francisco. They re-signed Tim Lincecum and still have Matt Cain as well. Considering the direction they seem to be going, Haren could be someone they can have at a decent price with a good return.
Also on the good side of this is the fact that it will get Haren back over on the West Coast which he seems to like much better than being on the East Coast. A lot of teams will be interested in Haren but the bidding war shouldn’t get all that ugly. He is still in his early to mid-30’s but still has enough uncertainty built in that he won’t be looking at a seven year deal for a boatload of money. Getting him signed would allow the Giants to still have the freedom to likely do a little more in the market or trade market as well.
