If anyone outside the realm of the Texas Rangers doesn’t know who Martin Perez is, you likely will before the end of the next season or two. They recently signed him to a multi-year extension that very well could be the best signing they will accomplish all offseason. His first full season in Major League Baseball saw Perez put up respectable 3.62 ERA with 10 wins. Both of those are improved over the partial first season.
Also improved was the very important WHIP stat for the season. He really appears to have nothing but a great future ahead of him. That is why the Rangers decision to sign him through the end of his 20’s a few years from now was such a great decision. Now they don’t have to worry about rumors of free agency or anything of the sort. They can just sit back and watch him further develop into one of the better young starters they have.
For a team that is always willing to go out and sign a hot free agent or trade prospects away for a big trade piece, it is a bit refreshing to see a few players come in from their farm system and succeed. I don’t think anyone on the team offensively or defensively has a more promising future than Perez. Don’t be surprised if the newly extended starter has what many will call a breakout season in 2014.
