The offseason in baseball means anything can happen. Teams try to make big trades and sign the biggest names who are free agents. The Philadelphia Phillies are in the same boat. Yesterday, they signed free agent Marlon Byrd. Today, the rumor mill is spinning about the Phillies moving Domonic Brown.
It is being reported that the Phillies are looking to move Brown and more to the Toronto Blue Jays. In return, the Phillies would get Jose Bautista, who is another older veteran. Why do the Phillies want to keep getting older? Why not just keep Brown? He is a young outfielder who has a lot of time left in the game.
Brown is one of the hottest bats in the Phillies lineup. This season, the team had a difficult time with producing runs. Why would they want to deal away their top RBI producer? This season, Brown had 83 RBIs. The closest player to him was 14 RBIs away. I would say that is a big difference. Brown also had the most home runs on the team this season with 24.
Brown was hot in the beginning of season. He calmed down near the end of the season, but that is normal for any player. He still ended up with a batting average of .272. Brown still found a way to help his team, which the Phillies need.
Bautista is 33-years old. That may not be old to some but with the signing of Byrd yesterday, you do not want two-thirds of the outfield to have a combined age over 60. Brown also had better numbers than Bautista this season. Bautista has had really good seasons in the past, but his age may be starting to show.
This is just a rumor, so the chance of it actually happening is not too great. The idea of it is just ridiculous. Hopefully it stays a rumor and Brown will be the Phillies’ left fielder come April.
