Los Angeles Dodgers Rumors: Re-Signing Brian Wilson No Longer an Option?

Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson was great in limited innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers since his return from Tommy John surgery, and I was hoping a new contract offer would be given to him this offseason. After hearing Wilson say he wanted to be paid like a closer if he returned to L.A., my opinion on his contract dealings has now changed.

Kenley Jansen is hands-down the closer of the Dodgers and he’s a candidate for a contract extension at some point in the near future too. With that said, it would be extremely stupid for Los Angeles to pay Wilson closer money when he’s clearly not the closer of the team.

The bullpen for L.A. could use a few upgrades, but the Dodgers would be smart to pay the stars they already have rather than jack up their payroll even more by brings in free agents that may or may not be worth it in the long run. There are plenty of teams out there that have shaky closer situations and Wilson may be the answer for those teams, but that is not the case in L.A.

Brian would be a great setup man for Jansen, but Ronald Belisario filled that role nicely for the majority of the season before Wilson arrived. Re-signing Belisario to a cheaper deal is now the smarter thing for the Dodgers to do even though I feel Wilson is the better of the two.

The New York Yankees have backed out of the running for Wilson due to his incredibly awesome facial hair, and now the Dodgers are likely out of the running as well. Brian is a very interesting individual because of how he looks and acts, but he can pitch very well also, and that’s exactly why he will earn a decent pay day this offseason. His checks just won’t be getting signed by the Dodgers.
