Miguel Cabrera said the words that everyone around the Tigers organization and fans already knew: He likes being a member of the Detroit Tigers organization and wants to stay for the rest of his career. The words were mainly no different than the words of Max Scherzer who stated last week that he did not want to be traded and wanted to stay with the Tigers, but the action of the Tigers is likely to be different. Unlike in Scherzer’s case, Cabrera is not expendable. There is no player on planet earth that could mean what Miguel Cabrera means not only to the team but to the city of Detroit.
Some will say that giving Miguel Cabrera a lifetime contract is too risky given the recent failures of Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez, but simply put the Tigers have no offense if there’s no Miguel Cabrera. You always worry about decline in sluggers, but Cabrera is just a hitting freak. He’s a man that has the purest talent in the world mixed with the baseball smarts unseen in a hitter in decades. Cabrera is not just a masher at the plate; he is a wizard who can know exactly what the pitcher is thinking at any moment, and he never tries to do too much. He is a once in a generation player who can hit his home runs but also give you the type of patience and willingness to take base hits or take a walk.
The Tigers cannot lose Miguel Cabrera at any cost. The team should be honored that so many players not only love being in Detroit but want to spend the rest of their days with the organization. For some that won’t come true, but for Miguel Cabrera there will be no obstacle that stops it from happening.
