The Philadelphia Phillies have until midnight tonight to offer five of their arbitration-eligible players new deals. One of those players is pitcher Kyle Kendrick. Earlier in the offseason, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had said that they were going to offer Kendrick arbitration. Is it going to actually happen?
It seems more than likely. The Phillies need to offer Kendrick a deal. Who else will they have in their rotation? Right now, they only have Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee locked in. Without Kendrick, there are not too many options left. Sure, you never know which Kendrick you are going to get, but he has moments where he is strong.
He finished the season with a 4.70 ERA. That may seem high, but he could be their secret weapon. In seasons past, he has had ERAs that were in the upper-three range, which is around average for a starter. He also managed to get 10 wins in 30 starts this season. With Kendrick only being 29-years old, he has time to continue to improve.
With the Phillies most likely not signing John Lannan and still being up in the air about Roy Halladay, they need a reliable pitcher. Kendrick has been with the organization since 2007. It is his time to shine and gain that confidence. Phillies fans have their mixed opinions of Kendrick. If he has one bad game, they believe he should be gone. Every pitcher has a bad game once in a while. Kendrick just has more than others.
With Kendrick being offered a contract and not having to fight for a job in the rotation, his confidence can rise. He can add more wins to his column and prove to everyone that he has what it takes to be a starting pitcher.
