Detroit Tigers: Move to First Base Should Improve Miguel Cabrera’s Offensive Numbers
Even though this was a move that was widely expected to happen, it was only made official yesterday.
Detroit Tigers’ GM Dave Dombrowski finally announced that the organization plans to move superstar Miguel Cabrera back to first base, meaning he will return to the position he played between 2008 and 2011 before the arrival of Prince Fielder.
With Fielder traded to the Texas Rangers and Ian Kinsler sliding into second, first base was up for grabs. Cabrera’s move to that position will also allow highly-touted prospect Nick Castellanos to play at the hot corner, forming one of the best infields in the AL. What’s terrifying for the other teams is that with the move to a less-physically demanding position, Cabrera’s offensive numbers should improve as the season advances.
Cabrera was reportedly playing with a series of injuries last year that limited his performance, something that sounds quite incredible considering that he put up a .348/.442/.636 slash line with 44 homers and 137 RBIs.
El Tigre de Aragua, as he’s known in his native Venezuela, was stretched defensively and that caused him to be banged up quite often. With the move to first, Cabrera goes back to a position he’s able to handle properly and that will not only benefit the team, but it will also benefit Cabrera as he will have the chance to take better care of his body.
Considering what Cabrera did this past two seasons, it seemed unlikely that he could produce more offensively, but the move back to first should allow him to be an even more dominant force if he’s able to stay healthy throughout the year.
