The Toronto Blue Jays were confident in that they finally managed to get a bona fide ace when they acquired R.A. Dickey from the New York Mets last offseason. Now heading into 2014, the picture that was painted in regards to the team’s 2013 starting rotation doesn’t seem to look all that perfect anymore.
Alex Anthopoulos has been very active in trying to address the issue with his starting five so far this offseason, as the Blue Jays’ GM has been linked to the likes of Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs and just recently, Brett Anderson of the Oakland Athletics. Anthopoulos wants someone who will make an immediate impact on his club, and this is why he has now reportedly been in contact with the Tampa Bay Rays in regards to their ace David Price.
Although the Blue Jays landing a premier hurler from an American League East division rival would seem extremely unlikely, if the price is right, Price himself could find himself in a Blue Jays uniform between now and next week’s Winter Meetings. The Rays would be looking for someone in return who is major league ready and who will also make an immediate impact at “The Trop.” The Rays love young talent, and that is exactly what the Blue Jays would have to be willing to give up.
Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman are two of MLB‘s top pitching prospects, and they are also who Anthopoulos may be shopping for if he wants a realistic shot at locking down a deal for Price. Not to mention he would have to throw in an above average position player at the very least. A deal like this could get really expensive, especially since there are many teams that will be involved in discussions as well.
It seems unlikely, but the fact that Anthopoulos has made his club somewhat of a trade option for Tampa Bay has to put a smile on the face of any fan of the Blue Jays. This is a deal that would have to come at a premium, but no matter what the Blue Jays would have to give up, to land a pitcher like Price and all of a sudden have a rotation that has both 2012 Cy Young Award winners in him and Dickey would be absolutely priceless. No pun intended.
