Almost since Arizona Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers traded all of his power-hitting outfielders last offseason, there has been a feeling that he wanted more power-hitting outfielders. Sure enough as the 2013 MLB Winter Meetings get started today Towers lists a power outfielder as a big need of his. Across the state line there is a power hitting outfielder that is up on the trade block for the Los Angeles Angels in Mark Trumbo.
Done, go get him. I think there could be no more perfect situation for the DBacks than this. They have good pitching in their farm system so that they could lose one minor league prospect and even one current MLB starter and still be in good shape in both places. The Angels are openly seeking pitching so that would work well. The addition of Trumbo to the outfield would greatly increase their offensive power and you can imagine the effect of placing Trumbo just before Paul Goldschmidt in the batting order.
Which exact starting pitchers the DBacks would want to give up really doesn’t matter. They should hang on to their best prospects of course but that still leaves solid prospects to go. Randall Delgado would be an attractive piece to trade and he is currently MLB ready after having success last season for the DBacks. Whatever the package he chooses; Towers needs to go complete this deal. There could be another outfielder available for him as well if he was able to get Trumbo and still have a few bucks left over.
