It’s no secret that the Cleveland Indians are determined to make some moves during the 2013 Winter Meetings to keep the team competitive for next season. With that being said, no one could have predicted how extreme those moves would be.
The Indians are reportedly interested in the possible trade of shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and starting pitcher Justin Masterson. The two All-Stars could fetch the Indians quite the package in the ensuing days.
Cabrera is no surprise as this won’t be the first time he is involved with trade rumors. The 28-year-old is scheduled to make $10 million in the last year of his contract. His numbers have dropped considerably and he is a liability on defense. It would honestly be a dream come true if the organization could find a way to get some quality for him.
On the other hand, it’s somewhat surprising to see Masterson’s name in a trade rumor. I almost have to imagine that Cleveland is dangling his name out there just to see who will bite. I would be shocked if they actually dealt him. The reason for that is because the starting rotation needs improvement. Depleting it by subtracting Masterson is taking a huge step in the wrong direction, especially since Scott Kazmir and Ubaldo Jimenez will be gone next year.
It will certainly be interesting to see which teams contact the Indians for either player. I’m more intrigued on what Cleveland thinks they will get for Masterson as Cabrera may attract very little attention.
