The Miami Marlins are looking for a third baseman and have already expressed interest in free agent Juan Uribe. However, the Marlins could look to make a trade for third baseman because they do have pieces to move in order to get better. The Cleveland Indians are rumored to be open to trading Asdrubal Cabrera, someone the Marlins should jump on.
Cabrera has not played a lot of third base at all. However, the team converted Hanley Ramirez a few years back and the team could surely move Cabrera to third base. Cabrera has spent his entire career with the Indians mostly playing second base and shortstop. He has a career batting average of .273/.335/.413 with 73 home runs and 390 RBIs. With those numbers, Miami may have to give up more than one player and not just potentially Logan Morrison.
The trade makes a bit of sense because Miami does not usually go out and sign high-priced talent. Cabrera has $10 million remaining on his contract and Miami would get him for one year. Although the team is not looking for a stopgap at third base, Miami could easily look for another option next season.
Cleveland’s asking price is going to be interesting. The Indians do not need a first baseman and would most likely want some sort of prospect in return for Cabrera. Miami should press for his bat, but it will more than likely be hard to acquire him.
