2013 MLB Winter Meetings: Texas Rangers Should Make Nelson Cruz a Priority

As unsure as many fans of the Texas Rangers are about their team going into next season, their fears could be eased slightly with the signing of an impact player for the outfield. Shin-Soo Choo has been someone that the Rangers were said to be interested in since before the season ended but he isn’t the only player available. One of the better available outfielders is their own Nelson Cruz who just had his contract with them expire.

Choo is an impact top of the lineup kind of player for sure but his price tag rides upwards to around $22M annually. That is something that wasn’t necessarily too much a short time ago but with the addition of the heavy salary of Prince Fielder, it most certainly is. One look at Scott Boras, Choo’s agent, will tell any Rangers executive or fan that a smaller price tag is not going to happen.

The answer is Cruz. Recently the Rangers have been said to be very interested in resigning Cruz. While his payday will still be quite high, it certainly will be nowhere near what Choo will demand. Sure, there were issues with Cruz and the PED scandal but that stuff is in the past. Cruz is the best and most affordable option out there for the Rangers. They really need to make it a priority to sign him to a deal.
