Shortly before the regular season ended the San Francisco Giants signed a deal with Hunter Pence that some believed was way too high. Their recent signing of free agent Mike Morse cures all of those ills however. The final day of the 2013 MLB Winter Meetings now may have provided the best deal of the entire week with Morse going to the Giants for a base $6M salary loaded with incentives.

Morse has tons of potential even at a slightly older age than some might want to believe in potential. He has had injury problems but his bat can still be very powerful. He also could produce very little which is why the Giants were able to get him for less money. It can be assumed that Morse chose the Giants for several reasons, not the least of which the chance to win is now which might have kept him from the Houston Astros.

The incentives should provide Morse even more motivation than he naturally has to re-establish his value as a major league slugger. I really don’t know why more contracts can’t be lower with incentives but for sure this one is a masterful deal for the Giants. They get the big bat potential with almost zero risk. This deal along with other moves this offseason begin to make the Giants look like quick contenders once again.
