Boston Red Sox: Jonathan Herrera’s Arrival Does Not Exclude Stephen Drew’s Return
The Boston Red Sox made a trade with the Colorado Rockies recently where they sent pitchers Franklin Morales and Chris Martin to Colorado for infielder Jonathan Herrera. Morales has an electric arm, but he had been injured quite a bit and Boston has two very strong lefties in the bullpen, Andrew Miller and Craig Breslow. Morales had basically become redundant.
Coming to Boston is infielder Jonathan Herrera, who will be a very useful infielder. He can play second, shortstop and third base and is very solid defensively. He also has some speed. He is somewhat like Pedro Ciriaco, but is much better offensively and defensively. What some Boston fans seem to think is that Herrera’s arrival means Stephen Drew definitely won’t be returning.
That absolutely is not the case. Herrera is projected as a utility infielder and nothing more, and Ben Cherington had mentioned that he had been looking for someone to back up the left side of the infield for quite a while during the offseason. It is still very possible to see Drew at shortstop, Xander Bogaerts at third base and Herrera backing them both up. Boston management is extremely high on Drew, but they are waiting for his price to go down a bit before they sign him.
I do feel that this trade may be the end for Will Middlebrooks in a Red Sox uniform, however. Now that Mike Napoli is signed and is back at first base and with Drew still very much in Boston’s future, there just doesn’t appear to be a fit for the third baseman in Boston.
Perhaps Middlebrooks and one of Boston’s starters might make a very attractive package deal for some team. This will also spell the end for John McDonald in a Red Sox uniform. He didn’t play much for Boston but man, he could play some defense. There’s nothing like watching a good glove out there.
Don’t give up on Drew. It would not be surprising to see him sign sometime after the New Year. That would make their defense up the middle really strong. All I have to say is Jacoby Who?
