I’m not sure what C.C. Sabathia‘s new years resolution was, but if it was to lose weight then this starting pitcher deserves some sort of medal! Sabathia is entering his 14th MLB season this year and is doing so in style. After nearly two decades of being known as a “big and powerful” pitcher, the New York Yankees‘ starter is starting to look like Denzel Washington and not Prince Fielder.

Yes, that is Sabathia in the black tuxedo. No, you are not hallucinating. While it’s rather difficult to get an official number on professional athletes’ height and weight these days, Sabathia has always hovered around the 290-300 lbs mark, which is pretty large for a starting pitcher. Nonetheless, Sabathia hasn’t really had any reason to change his figure as no active pitcher has more wins than Sabathia — Tim Hudson and Sabathia currently share the crown with 205 victories apiece.
With that being said, New York saw a watered-down version of Sabathia in 2013 as the starter posted a career-low 4.78 era and went on to lose 13 games, which was also a career-high. Yet, you have to give the Yankees’ ace a pat on the back here as Sabathia has slimmed down considerably because he knows a 33-year-old starter just can’t get by doing the things that a 21-year-old can. Let’s hope the weight stays off and this former Cy Young Award winner returns to dominant form in 2014.
