The 2014 Shortstop Prospect Rankings are out and Chicago Cubs fans can be proud of Javier Baez who ranks second among all of Major League Baseball behind only Xander Bogaerts. We can all really be happy for him and all he has accomplished at shortstop. Just don’t expect him to play there when he hits the big leagues sometimes this coming season. It is nothing against him really but more the fact that Starlin Castro is plastered into the starting line-up at short everyday and does a great job there.
During his 2014 beginnings at Triple-A for the Cubs organization, Baez will still play shortstop but he will get a good bit of time playing second base as well. It is expected that he will debut sometime during 2014 even if that happens to be at the end for a September call-up. His time at second base in the minors however could provide the Cubs with an earlier call-up option if he is killing the baseball in Triple-A like he did last season everywhere.
Of course if the Cubs are doing well and Darwin Barney is rebounding to numbers from his Gold Glove season in 2012, it might be difficult to make that call without absolutely ridiculous numbers from Baez. After all they did make at least one or two early call-ups within the last few years that they themselves deem were too soon.
If Barney struggles at second then it is anyone’s guess when the call might come. If he doesn’t then we are probably going to have to wait until the last month of the season before Baez gets a nod and they can work out his starting position the next season in Spring Training.
