The fact that the Miami Marlins have a hole at third base isn’t really that big of a surprise considering their situation. Actually over the last year they have had fewer fulfilled roles than holes. They have done some things to fill roles this offseason however. They have a catcher, second baseman and a new first baseman as well. One role that has not solidly been filled is the one at third base.
That isn’t to say the Marlins have not addressed the situation at third, they just haven’t gone out and signed a top third base free agent to fill the role absolutely. What they have is a conglomerate of players who could potentially win the third base job or at least part of the third base job. More specifically they have Casey McGehee, Greg Dobbs, Ed Lucas and even possibly Ty Wiggington.
Each of these guys will have a chance to win a part of the third base job as well as another spot on the roster during spring training. Of all of them, Lucas is the one that had the most success last season. In fact he had a 1.5 WAR which was the best of any Marlins infielder in 2013. He should be able to win this job and the Marlins should give him a long look as the leading third baseman during camp. It should be his job to lose.
