The news of the gigantic new deal that came to Clayton Kershaw sent buzz around Major League Baseball. When Masahiro Tanaka was signed to another big deal the buzz only grew louder. As far as Boston Red Sox fans are concerned, some of that buzz made them wonder if their ace Jon Lester would be worth a huge deal like those other guys. If he was, did that mean he was as good as gone?
For anyone wondering about that there is certainly good news. Lester wants something from his contract and he was very specific about it. Luckily for those of us who think baseball is more a game than it is a business, Lester’s demands were that he wanted he and his family to be respected financially and he wanted to stay in Boston until someone ripped the jersey off of his back.
Maybe it’s just me but that really puts a smile on my face. I know he isn’t the only one but he is certainly the most prominent that has taken such a position in a while. To be willing to accept less money, sometimes quite a bit less depending on what the market value for a MLB ace is, to stay loyal to a certain team is so refreshing.
Hopefully the Red Sox will be able to ink him to an extension that will be what both sides wants. I have a feeling that the deal they sign him to will be one that will surprise some, especially if he continues to produce the way he has of late. It would be quite nice if such a move would inspire other top tier pitchers to take the same stance.
