As the Kansas City Royals prepare to make another run at success in 2014, there is little doubt they will need a good pitching staff to get that done. Mostly they need a good starting staff like they were able to pull off last season. They have lost Ervin Santana and likely will not get him back even if his price drops. That means they might want to fill one more rotation hole.
That could be the perfect spot for pitching prospect Yordano Ventura. When it comes to prospective pitchers Ventura is right up the best that the Royals have in their system. Last season he had a few strong outings, two of which were extremely promising. While the third was a stumbling block, it does not take away from the success he had in the other two.
Because of the strong stuff that Ventura has, the Royals think it is very possible that he could make the starting rotation out of Spring Training. If he is able to take enough forward steps during the spring that he makes the team, it could be a much cheaper and possibly better option than some other internal and free agent possibilities they have.
Though there is certainly no guarantee with prospects as far as how they will fare in their first full season, it would seem like a near certainty that Ventura would perform well. If he were to do so this would not only be uplifting for the team as a whole but also would be encouraging to see. Nothing is better than seeing a team successfully fill a need by using their own farm system. If the Royals can start doing that, the sky is the limit.
