5 Cleveland Indians Who Won’t Make it Through 2014 Spring Training

Though the Cleveland Indians have done very little this offseason of note, they still must be one of the most excited teams to get back together this Spring Training and do it all again. After all no one around Major League Baseball thought they could do last season what they did. Yet there they were playing in October for a chance to get into the thick of everything in the ALDS.

They didn’t quite make it as we all know but they weren’t even supposed to compete on that level last season. Supposedly they are doing at least a partial rebuild where they don’t spend a ton of money at every single position, but just a few. Those positions where they do not spend a ton of money they either trust a home grown product there or wait patiently another season or two for the right player to come of age.

Going into the camp season of baseball the Indians have a ton of situations that have to be worked out. Because they aren’t willing to go out and spend dozens of millions of dollars everywhere, the positions that needed outside help either have a few spring training invitees or minor league players looking for a chance. Of those players it is inevitable that a few of them will fall short and not make it through spring training. Here are five that have a good chance to come up short.

Bringing in Francoeur is not a bad idea but the Indians have enough outfield options that he will have a tough time making the cut. He would have to really regain form from years ago and I just don’t see that happening in such short time.

Adams can play third and first base. He will get a look for sure as a bench option but the Indians are pretty well stacked in that area. It would be extremely tough for him to rise above the others there.

Jose Ramirez

Ramirez is a talented option at second base or third base but he is one of a few that has minor league time left to serve. He will get a taste of the bigs but be back down in time for the start of the minor league season.

This situation seems much the same as Francoeur. He is a talent and has a good bit to offer but the Indians, with their moves this offseason and those returning seem plenty well off in the outfield.

Tyler Cloyd

Even if they do not get Ubaldo Jimenez back, which is still an outside chance; the Indians will likely be set at starter without Cloyd there. He could have a shot but he would really have to step above a few others.
