Last season the Tampa Bay Rays achieved the main goal of every single Major League Baseball team going into every single MLB season. They were a part of the postseason. Sure they lost but their loss was even better because they can always say it took the World Series Champions a while to take them out of the series.

All of that is over now though as they have to rebuild another team capable of fighting with the big fish in the American League East and go after it. Once again they will be underdogs because that is who they are. No one ever expects them to win; no one except them that is. Perhaps that is exactly why they continue to compete. Either way, they get to go to spring training and build a team capable of winning it all again in 2014.

When I say capable of winning it all again I refer to the basic feeling that any team fully into the postseason has the ability to win it all. At any rate, they have a good bit of turnover again as well as nice additions. The various undecided positions have way more players than they need and some already decided positions will have several cuts behind them like third base for example. I think we all know the pecking order there. Here are five players that are unlikely to make it through.

With the trade for Logan Forsythe, the Rays really should be stacked well at most infield positions as far as bench players go. That is likely why Nix will not make it through.

Betemit still has some good baseball left in him for sure but it won’t come with a team that has the comfort at third and first that the Rays have.

I like any catcher named Molina but it would be a big long shot for the Rays to give the backup catching spot to Molina when they have Jose Lobaton for that. They would have to keep three catchers all season long and I don’t think that is going to happen.

Belnome still has some work to do in the minors and will probably be sent down to Triple-A before the end of Spring Training.

Lee is thought highly enough of that the Rays protected him from the Rule 5 draft and he is bound to get a look in the spring. Still he will probably get a chance at more time in the minors before he will be given a long term shot at MLB.
