5 Questions the Cleveland Indians Must Answer During Spring Training

There is something different about the Cleveland Indians now than was there two years ago. They are not like every other team in Major League Baseball. For one thing they are very easy to cheer for and very difficult to cheer against. They have that appealing underdog label and they wear it extremely well. There is more to it than that however.

It really comes down to Terry Francona. Not only is he one of the best managers in the game but he also seems to bring a fun atmosphere wherever he is. Then he brings in guys like Jason Giambi and that wacky first baseman that everyone loves to laugh with and things get more fun. The fact that this team will be well managed and also have fun while they are playing is not something that is questionable.

There are a few things that are questions that need to be answered though. Offensively the team is not the greatest in history on paper but then they weren’t supposed to be as good as they were last season either. Who knows where Tito will take this 2014 squad? What we need to know however are the answers to the following five questions. Yes, these need to be answered at least in a partial way during Spring Training.

5 – Will Jason Giambi Make the Roster Once Again?

Right out of the gate I’ll tell you that I love this guy. I know his batting average wasn’t great but there is something to be said for what a player adds to the personality and the soul of a team. Giambi helped make this team what it was last season. Will they give him the same roster spot this season? I have to believe they will but because he is a minor league contracted, non-roster invite to Spring Training the decision still has to be made.

4 – Will Trevor Bauer Make a Case to be Major League Worthy?

Bauer had some good signs and some not so good ones during his spot starts in MLB last season. Spot starts have never been a great teller of future fortunes however. Will he be able to show himself developed to the point required for the Indians to give him a rotation spot out of the gate? I think it is at least very possible and certainly should be watched closely.

3 – Who Will be the Fifth Starter?

Whether it ends up being Bauer or one of the other three or four guys fighting for the spot, this is certainly not going to be decided early on. It is a different question because even of Bauer makes himself MLB worthy; he might still not get the spot out of the gate. Considering the mix of guys the Indians have though, it could be possible that more is up for grabs that it seems on the surface.

2 – Can Justin Masterson Succeed with the All-Star Team Ace Label?

Masterson was the first starter one year ago but now he is the absolute ace of the staff and he has the added honor of being an all-star. That will certainly be motivating one would think but it could also be some extra weight to bear. It seems that Masterson is the type that will do well with the extra burden of needing to be the best there is in Cleveland but we still will need to wait and see.

1 – What Will Danny Salazar’s Spring Look Like?

Salazar could potentially end up being one of the reasons this team succeeds over the long-haul of the regular season. His ability to be as good as he can be most of the time would be invaluable to them. How he fairs in the Spring Training games might well start him out on a good or bad note. Here is hoping he hits all the marks he needs to hit in order to be dominant.
